Ode
There are several references in this piece which culminate in "Ode on a Grecian Urn" by Keats. The musical notation is based on "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the design motif and shape are based on Greek pottery, and, as you'll see in the closeup below, the last two stanza's of the poem are written on the other side.
The base is created from fiber cement clay over an armature, the color is collaged and painted on, the clear glass is tempered in the ribbon and non-reflective plate glass on the remainder. The notes and words are painted onto fused glass pieces.
Butterfly Eyes
This piece was created for the 2008 Rotary Club "Butterflies and Friends" event. 30 Colorado Springs artists were given butterflies made of powder-coated aluminum to transform into works of art. The resulting pieces were auctioned off in October 2008 and the proceeds raised are helping to fund an arts program at a local grade school.
"Butterfly Eyes" incorporated fused and stained glass and won the Juror's Award. Additional information about the project is available at http://www.artsandfriends.org/
Nocturne in Ursa Major
Another fund raising project, this one for Pikes Peak Mental Health in 2005. "Ursala" measures over 6' tall and about 38" around. The base is of formed fiberglass provided by cowpainters.org. She is covered with vitreous glass tiles in white, blues, purples and black and green flat-backed marbles.
